(This article was published in a Perry County, Tennessee history about 1994.)

 James Newton Bowman (1826-1871)

and

Tennessee Texas Graham (1831-1928)

James Newton Bowman Bowman was b. in Perryville, Perry County on January 7, 1826 to

Sarah Graham and William C. Bowman (maybe William Campbell Bowman).  He m.

in Cass County, Texas on November 4, 1851 to Tennessee Texas Graham, first cousin

and daughter of Mahaly Caughron and Robert Crawford Graham.

He arrived in Texas in time to enlist Col. Young's 3rd TX Regt. in the Mexican

War, Captain Rice's Company, Texas Mounted Volunteers.   Later he was in the

Quartermaster's Dept. of Col. Folsom's Reg. of the Confederacy.

Shortly after their 1851 marriage, they moved to Sulphur Springs, Hopkins County

TX, where James engaged in the mercantile business.   In 1863 they moved to Old

Pine Bluff, a trading post on the Red River in Red River County about 15 miles

north of (now) Detroit TX.  Bowman Hill was located on the road that connected

Paris (Lamar County TX) with Indian Territory.  They built a house of hand-hewn

logs with puncheon floors and with cracks in walls large enough for dogs to squeeze

through.  They went into Indian Territory to find logs.   Stories refer to the

black walnut trees and wooded areas around Bowman Hill.   Steamboat demands

probably had denuded the Red River banks.  Later in 1869, they moved the house

to make room for a "lumber" house, but in 1926 the old house was still in use as

a corn bin.

Choctaws from the Choctaw Nation, just across the Red River, were a common

sight along the highway to Paris.  Men would ride horses with guns across

their laps followed by their women carrying babies and baskets to sell.

James built the first cotton gin in that part of Texas.  It was cranked by

hand, so only three or four bales could be ginned per day.   The marketing

custom was that steamboat owners would buy cotton from farmers paying only a

small percent of the cotton's actual value, then pay the farmer the balance on

a return trip, sometimes six months later.

Constant hardships.  James' widow said:  "For salt, we would go as far as Grand

Saline, Van Zandt County, Texas [100 miles].   To mill corn, we would go to Cass

County [100 miles].  [But they could travel by water to Cass County, whereas

they had to travel by land to Grand Saline.]   For soda, we'd boil ashes down."

Slaves were an important part of the Bowman's lives: all remained close friends

the rest of their lives.   Manda McCameron, yellow in color, was a wedding gift

from father-in-law, R.C. and is recorded in Cass County.   Manda married and

left their farm.   Uncle Jim and Aunt Emma Humphreys had their own farm by the

1920s.  Emma was the daughter of Lit Lipscomb: four generations of Lipscombs

worked for the Bowmans.  Ann McCarty was still alive in the 1920s.  Mitch and

Joanna Record helped make 19 crops; Joanna received an Indian allotment of land

since she was part Indian.  "Aunt Julie's" real name was Julie Ann, Rebecca Jane,

Pagy, Angy, Pongy, Lahoe, Tahoe, Yankee Doodle, Liza Hearn.  "Toose's" name was Melia, Delia, Celia, Relia, God-in-hand, Lugenia, Alice Jane, Toosy Littleton

Johnson, Fleeks.  Zill and Tebe Lipscomb had children Sweat Meat and Cuby Spain

(not Cuba, born during Spanish-American War).

While on a business trip in Paris, James became sick and died on October 14,

1871 of "swamp fever" or "hemorrhage of the kidneys" or malaria; buried in

Evergreen Cemetery, Lamar County TX.   His son James Newton Jr. had d. in 1870

of malaria also.   Mosquitoes were rampant on the Red River

.

I'm interested in finding out some more information from this article I found on the internet. I'm more interested in the portion that refers to James Newton Bowman and Tennessee Texas Graham starting on page 4. Many of the slaves that worked for James Bowman are related to me. Julie Ann Rebecca Jane Pagy Angy Pongy Lahoe Tahoe Yankee Doodle Liza Hearn is my great great grandmother. Tebe (Susan) Lipscomb was her daughter.

I have been researching my ancestry for about a year now and was stunned when I saw this article. Can you provide any more details about the slaves on that farm?

You referred to a book of some type where the information was taken from of the slaves' names. OK, It's the 1994 Perry Co TN History. Is your article a summary of the information available or is it all that is available in the book on the Bowmans' slaves in Red River County?

Bowman - Younger search Date : Sat, Jul 31, 2010 09:50 AM, Cecelia Dillashaw, Bowman Dillashaw ceceliadillashaw@att.net ....    Was looking at Rootsweb.com yesterday and ran across two searches for Bowman/Younger family. One from a Lawrence Price looking for info on GW Bowman and Eliza Younger. Says they married abt 1828, went to Missouri where 1st child was born then to Lamar Co Tex. He's looking for info on Eliza (father Josephus Younger born in Halifax Co VA, died 1848 in Tenn).   The other one I found on the Elmore Brice Bowman message board.    from a   jdbprb@bluebonnet.net   now   referencing GW and Eliza moving to tx about 1870 GW killed by a Ringo maybe Lamar Co or Red River Co   Have ya'll ever had contact with messengers? I am emailing the jdbprb person to find out who they are.    Interesting, huh! .... Cecelia >ceceliadillashaw@att.net<.. Cecelia >ceceliadillashaw@att.net< ....
