Charlotte Graham Reeves   (c1800-1855)

My direct ancestor  was her brother, Charles Graham (1792-1875)

Caution  from Gerald Witt of Camp Verde TX on Jan 29, 2009.   I am not ready to “sign on” to Charlotte being the daughter of John Graham (b.1827) and Sarah.  Everything fits, but I am nagged by the fact that Charlotte was living near a William Graham on the 1820 census of White Co. TN.  And the fact Charlotte and John were closely tied to a William Graham in Tishomingo County, Mississippi for years and he is about 22 years older than Charlotte. I have ordered White Co. tax and land records for that period of time. Hopefully, I can sort out the Grahams of 1820 in White Co. and Warren Co.   I think they are all part of the same family.

***********

Marriage of Charlotte Graham and John Reeves probably  1819 or 1820 probably near the Warren-White Co TN line.

John Reeves, "John Reeves was born 17 January 1786 according to the entry in the James Robertson Bible. However, both the Frensley Bible and the William Steele Reeves Bible list his date of birth as 17 January 1787. I believe the 1787 date is correct since it is found in two of his children’s Bibles and agrees with the census.   He had two younger brothers, Thomas, born 11 February 1789 and William Steele born 9 March 1794.   per Gerald Witt of Camp Verde TX.

He had two younger brothers, Thomas Reeves, born 11 February 1784. and William Steel Reeves born 9 March 1794.   He had two sisters-Betsy born 18 August 1791 and Dorinda born 1 November 1798.  Betsy married a man named Mayes (no known first name) and Dorinda married William Galloway.  .....   My John Reeves (and I don’t have any evidence that his middle initial is H) left Mississippi and moved to Grayson County in late 1854 or early 1855. One of my sources states that Charlotte died enroute on 11 June 1854.

All of the children moved to Hickman County-the surviving land records show this. I believe that Thomas stayed in Hickman County, but the other four left. John moved to Tishomingo County, Mississippi in 1836 and the other three moved to Crawford County Arkansas. Dorinda and William Galloway died there and are buried on William S. (Billie) Reeves farm. Betsy with her children moved to the Palestine, Texas area. William S. and his family moved to Grayson County prior to 1848-according to his land patent dated 19 April 1850.

Charlotte Graham, b-c1800 in Randolph Co NC to possibly __ ? Newton [or Sarah  ? Rains] and John Graham [d-1827 Davidson Co TX, buried probably in Decatur Co TN].   Nancy (Graham) Rains may be a sis-in-law to Sarah Graham.   Charlotte died ca. 1855 while enroute from Mississippi to Texas.

2. Emily C. Reeves, m. in Tishomingo Co MS on Apr 25, 1838 to Benjamin W. Johnson [d-1858].   She is in 1850 Cass Co TX with husband and four children, . not far from your Charles Graham.

Emily, m,2-Hopkins Co TX on Feb 19, 1852 to L.W. Campbell

Emily, m,3-William Bedford and spent the rest of her life in Limestone and Robertson Counties. I have found her on the 1880 and the 1900 census of Limestone Co TX, missing 1910. . In 1900 she is living with her son James W. Johnston and report that she was born in Nov 1824.

3.  John Graham Reeves m-Cass Co TX on Feb 10, 1850 to Asenath "Sintha" Sutherland; 1850 in Cass County, Texas. He is on the 1870 Robertson Co TX cen listed as Rewis in some census indexes.  ... Aseneth Sutherland Reeves, wife of John Graham Reeves was born circa 1829 in TN and died in 1892 in TX.  The unfortunate lapse in siblings for Robert Philip Reeves, son of John Graham Reeves,  is because we had no idea of who they were.  I've since found the 1870 Robertson Co. TX census in which John Graham Reeves is indexed as Rewis on page 197.  There are children listed, Porter, Cidney (blind), Elizy, Nannie and Virginia, but not found any information about them anywhere.

4. Phedora C. Reeves, m. in Tishomingo Co MS on Nov 16, 1848 to William Frensley. Wm. Frensley, was part of the Mier Expedition into Mexico.  Phedora and husband William are living in the same household with sis Emily and William Johnston in the 1850 Cass Co TX cen..   Issue, 3 ch: John A.Q, 11 MS; Robert P. 7 TX; James B. 3 TX

Phedora, m,2-Marrow.      She died in Robertson Co TX   I recently came into contact with a g.granddau of Phedora and she had Bible information. per Gerald Witt of Camp Verde TX.    Issue, none

4. Robert Perry Reeves,  m-Robertson Co. TX on Dec 27, 1877 in was born 26 Aug 1837 in Tishomingo County and this is my g.grandfather. He moved to Grayson County Texas with his father and was a chair carrier during the survey of the land. He is listed in the 1860 census of Grayson County as a school teacher. John Reeves is not found in the 1860 census of Grayson County, so I have assumed that he died prior to 1860. Some sources say 1867, but I can’t find anything after he sold the land in 1859. Many times you will find Robert Perry listed as R.P., but I have never found him call Bob; Lt in Co C of 11th TX Cav, wounded at Murfreesboro; Bourland's Regt., Ordnance Sgt, F&S.  In 1860 he married Harriett Arnold in Grayson County-she and the baby died during the delivery of their first child.

R.P. m-1877 Robertson Co TX to Elizabeth Calhoun.  R.P. buried Camp Verde, Kerr Co TX.  Issue, __ ch:

5. Thomas Benton Reeves was the youngest child. He was born in Tishomingo County on 11 Apr 1842. He served in the same unit with his brother during the Civil War, Pvt in 11th TX Cav, Co C;. He was usually listed as T.B. He married Jewett Estes on 2 Sep 1868 in Jefferson, Marion County, Texas. He died 18 Jan 1925 and is buried in Port Lavaca, Texas. I am in contact with one of his g.granddaughters   per Gerald Witt of Camp Verde TX

1855 Charlotte Graham Reeves died enroute to Texas. According to family stories she never arrived in Texas, but died in route and was buried in the Mississippi River.

1855 Grayson Co TX   John Reeves received a preemptive claim of 160 acres on 15 March 1855. This land is not close to his brother, Billie, who lived near Pottsboro. But, it is near your T.W. Graham’s survey. Do you have a plat map of Grayson County? John Reeve’s survey is southwest of Thorne about 5-6 miles. I tried to locate this land last year and I believe it is land-locked today. It appears to me that T.W. Graham’s land is at the intersection of Highway 901 and Highway 56. The John Reeves property is on about 130 degree heading from the Graham survey. My best guess is-they would be about 5 miles apart.

Civil War.  R.P. Reeves entered CSA as a  Jr.2nd Lt. in Co. C. Young's Texas Regiment on Oct 2, 1861 at Camp Reeves, Texas by Maj. G.W. Chilton for a period of 12 months. From Oct 31, 1862 until Feb 1864 he was in the 11th Regiment Texas Cavalry. He was discharged (resigned) on February 10, 1865 from Co. C. 10 Reg. Texas Cavalry.    R.P. Reeves, Field & Staff, Ordnance Sgt, Bourland's Regt, Mar 1864.  ... 2nd Lieutenant under Capt. S.B. Savage in the 5th Texas Partisan Rangers.

Editor's note: The other Reeves family of the Grayson Co TX area.  ...  I think all the Reeves other than Robert Perry and Thomas Benton are going to be descendants of William S. Reeves. He became very wealthy as a freighter and owned huge amounts of land. One of his sons was George R. Reeves, the Colonel of the 11th Texas Cavalry, who later was of speaker of the Texas House. Reeves County (Pecos) in west Texas is named after him.
