After due return being made to the County Court, the said Benjamin Bourland was released by order of the judge. Who came to the conclusion that he had no right to keep the prisoner confined as he was a white man and the man he killed was also a white man. This the 28th of Dec. 1857. Josiah Brown, County Clerk of P.C.C.N." Editor’s note: Gilbert Ragin owned a successful grocery store in Clarksville TX complete with "... Port Medeira; Cordials; French brandy; champagne; Black and Cayenne Peppers; pickled lobsters, sardines and herring; Boston Crackers; dried fruit ..." per The Northern Standard, Aug 2, 1845. In 1857, Gilbert Ragin probably took a wagonload of goodies to Fort Arbuckle, I.T. that was being refurbished. Since this well-advertised refurbishment attracted skilled workmen of all stripes, it is probable that this set the stage for Benjamin L. Bourland to meet Gilbert Ragin.

Editor’s note: It is believed Joe Fisher’s family lived in Velma for the 1890 Pickens Co IT census, in the vicinity of the 20-square-mile Colbert Block Ranch, owned by widow Nancy Bourland Colbert (1845-1913). Many Bourland relatives, including William Howard ‘Chickasaw Bill’ Bourland (1847-1904) and probably this Ben L. Bourland, came to help Nancy manage this 20 square-mile ranch.. Chickasaw Bill Bourland’s son, "Michael Fraiser Bourland, was born Sep 4, 1893 on Wildhorse Creek, near Marlow, I.T." Earlier, Nancy Bourland Colbert was raised in the home with Chickasaw Bill Bourland after her parents died in 1852 when she was age seven. In the late 1890s, Chickasaw Bill Bourland was elected Secretary of the Chickasaw Nation charged with the task of doling out land allotments to proven Chickasaw residents This was the most powerful man in the Chickasaw Nation since he could have assigned non-contiguous allotments to a family, i.e., the children's allotments miles apart or assigned poor farm land. 1890 Pickens Co, Chickasaw Nation, I.T. census (now Marshall Co OK)...... 51500 Bowlin, Charles 20, Lebanon, son of Ben L.
