Editor's Note:  Cherokee Native American, Hiram Arnold had a first wife, name of Susan?  When she died, believe it was in child birth, he left Ohio with a bunch of other Cherokees and went to the Choctaw nation to hide from the white men. They knew they were being counted and rumor had it they were being sent to a new 'reservation'. The Cherokees went to live with the Choctaw, since the Choctaw were being counted but not being moved.  per Ancestry.com

1865 Fannin Co TX, Bonham, Apr 5.....COLONEL [James Bourland, Commanding on Frontier]:

Have complete lists of all the prisoners you have, made in triplicate, giving name, company, and regiment, or citizen as the case may be. Keep one, send one with prisoners, and send one to me. Should there be any citizens among the list — 103 captured by Col. [J.R.] Diamond — send them with others to Houston [Harris County].

If [McKamy's] company "K" reaches you in time, let it go with the prisoners as additional escort as far as Dallas and then report to [TST] Lt. Col. [W.W.] McGinnis for service against those deserters in Dallas, Ellis [Counties], & or any other portion of it you may see fit to send as a part of the 40 or 50 men ordered to those sections by me the other day.

Respectfully,

Henry E. McCulloch, Brig. Genl. Comdg, Hd. Qrs. Northern Sub Dist.   per BP-DM4406-3P-222.

Military Units of North Texas during last 1-1/2 years of the War

In summation, below is a listing of the Confederate units plus the 31 militias that patrolled North and West Texas plus Southern Indian Territory during the last 1-1/2 years of the Civil War.

Below from ORsIv26/2[S#42]pp84-85. ... GENERAL ORDERS No. 100, from Gen. J.B. Magruder, Hdqts. Dist., Texas, New Mexico and Arizona,  Houston, Texas, June 25, 1863.    The following will be the field organization of the troops of the Northern Sub-District, headquartered in Bonham TX.   (Keep in mind that the military units'  men on the North and West Frontier changed every three months.  See a drastic correction to this Jun 1863 in the Editor's note below.)

FIRST DIVISION, commanded by Brig-Gen. H. P. Bee, headquarters, Brownsville, Tex.

FIRST DIVISION, Second Brigade, commanded by Col. and Acting Brig. Gen. S. P. Bankhead; headquarters, Bonham, Tex.

1)    Hardeman's Regt, Texas cavalry, Hardeman’s (P.C.) Cavalry Battn - [Hawpe’s] 31st Cav.    Definition:  31st [T.C. Hawpe’s - F.J. Malone’s -Looscan’s] Cavalry  (see 1st and 4th Arizona Brigade.)

1865 March.   ...  Editor's note:     I speculate that the military units that captured prisoners between March 1864 and June 1865 for Bourland's Regiment to transfer to the CSA jail in Bonham, Fannin County were those military units listed below.  One batch of 107 prisoners were captured on April 9, 1865 in Wise County, Texas by Bourland's Regiment.

In summation, below is a listing of the Confederate units that patrolled North and West Texas plus Southern Indian Territory during the last 1-1/2 years of the Civil War.

 1) Wells' Battalion, Companies A and B patrolled between Fort Arbuckle, I.T. and Fort Belknap, Young Co TX: Scanland's Company A, most recruits from the Montague Co TX area; Good's-Gillett's Company B; initially Wells' Battn was recruited from the Panola Co TX area (581 men)

2) Pyron's 2d TX Cav, 2d Arizona Brigade, Co H, commanded by Capt. J.M. Roark (158 men recruited from Parker Co TX)

 3) LeKoester's  Co E (119 men), of Baird's-Showalter's 4th TX Cav, 4th Arizona Brigade, commanded by Major F.E. Kavanaugh.

4) Showalter's 4th TX Cav, 4th Arizona Brigade (50 men per ORsIv53[S#111]p378, McCulloch to Turner, Nov 1, 1863);  (661 men, no date,  per American Civil War Research Database).

5) McCord's 46th Frontier Cavalry CSA  (1,273 men in Mar 1864)

6) Confederate Brush Battalion, commanded by Major J.R. Diamond. (496 men in Nov 1863) ... J.R. Diamond was assigned Feb 10, 1865 the command of most of Bourland's Regt and Col. L.M. Martin's 5th TX Cav Partisan Rangers absorbed the remainder.  Meanwhile Bourland was promoted to command all of the military units of the North and West Frontier, then Col. Bourland, not Gen. McCulloch, signed the Jun 2, 1865 Confederate Surrender for the North Texas Sub-Dist. in Galveston TX.

7) Martin's 5th TX Cavalry Partisan Rangers (812 men)    .... on Feb 10, 1865 Martin absorbed some of Bourland's Regt.  while most of Bourland's Regt was then commanded by Lt-Col. J.R. Diamond.

8)  Baylor's Ladies' Rangers (remnants of), Pyron's 2d TX Cav, Co I, 2d Arizona Brigade (164 men in Dec 1863)

9)  J.B. "Buck" Barry's Frontier TX Cavalry ... Organized: 5/15/62; Mustered Out: 5/26/65 .... (1,158 men) ... but from about May 1864 to May 1865 this unit was also known as the 8th TX Cavalry Battn  (483 men)  .... was part of McCord's Frontier Cav at one time, but by Aug 1863, he was a Major working closely with Bourland.  .

10) Bourland's Border Regiment Cavalry (625 men listed in the American Civil War Research Database of Duxbury MA and .... 831 men listed in the National Park Service Sailors and Soldiers Database.)   Plus a least 50 soldiers who were on neither listing: Additional soldiers not mentioned in the archival records, but found in family records..

11) Capt. W.G. Moseley's 7th TX Light Artillery CSA (144 men listed in the American Civil War Research Database of Duxbury MA and .... 215 men listed in the National Park Service Sailors and Soldiers Database.)   Organized: 11/19/64; Mustered Out: 5/26/65.

12) Col. James Duff's 33d TX Cav or the 14th TX Partisan Rangers (1,093 men per American Civil War Research Database).

13)   Plus the 31 Texas State militia companies raised in 1864

commanded by Quayle then Throckmorton, both stationed in

          Decatur TX.

Editor's note:   Let's not overlook other military units (TST or CSA) that may have overlapped into the North and West Frontier: Border's-Anderson's TX Cav. Battn. --  not to be confused with Bourland's Border Cav. Regt.
